Innovation Beyond Borders

A collaborative innovation environment, transforming promising ideas into scalable solutions.

About

A collaborative innovation environment

What we do

AFA’s Incubation Factory is a collaborative innovation environment designed to help transform promising ideas into impactful and scalable solutions addressing societal, environmental, and technological challenges. We support startups, SMEs, researchers, young innovators, and emerging entrepreneurs working across AI, sustainability, health, agriculture, environmental resilience, renewable energy, and green technologies. Our approach combines practical innovation support, interdisciplinary collaboration, international exposure, and ecosystem-building activities that strengthen innovation readiness, resilience, and long-term sustainable growth.

Our mentoring ecosystem

AFA’s mentoring ecosystem is built through our international network of academic institutions, researchers, industry experts, innovators, sustainability specialists, policy professionals, entrepreneurs, think tanks, and strategic partners operating across Europe and beyond. In practice, participants engage in structured innovation pathways involving expert mentoring, collaborative workshops, innovation clinics, project feedback sessions, applied learning activities, networking opportunities, and cross-border exchanges. Through direct interaction with experienced professionals and multidisciplinary experts, innovators strengthen strategic thinking, leadership, adaptability, problem-solving capabilities, and the practical skills needed to navigate complex innovation and implementation environments.

Beyond conventional incubation

More than a conventional incubation initiative, AFA’s Incubation Factory promotes responsible, human-centred, and sustainability-driven innovation shaped through collaboration and real-world engagement. Particular emphasis is placed on supporting women, youth, early-stage innovators, and underrepresented communities by creating accessible pathways into international innovation ecosystems. By combining mentorship, stakeholder engagement, knowledge exchange, and practical innovation support, AFA contributes to more inclusive, resilient, and future-oriented innovation capable of generating meaningful societal and environmental impact across regions and communities.

Our process

Four stages, one trajectory

Each venture moves through a structured trajectory, designed to translate AI capability into deployable, accountable systems.

  1. 01

    Explore

    Validate the problem

Discovery sessions with stakeholders and end users, testing whether AI is the right tool, before building.

  2. 02

    Design

    Build with rigour

Co-creation with our research network, grounded in data and method. Architecture, governance, and trust by design.

  3. 03

    Pilot

    Deploy in the wild

Living-lab environments with real users. Feedback informs every iteration toward operational readiness.

  4. 04

    Scale

    Across regions and systems

Market translation with collaborators across the EU and beyond, sustaining impact at the systems level.

Governance & readiness

Aligned with the frameworks that matter

Regulatory alignment

EU AI Act

Readiness assessment, risk classification, and compliance mapping for AI systems entering the European market.

Standards alignment

ISO/IEC 42001 · NIST AI RMF

Management-system standards and risk-management frameworks built into every venture, not bolted on afterward.

Vidya is a hands-on learning app that demonstrates how LLM systems actually behave in practice. It makes the moving parts of an AI application visible: prompts, retrieval, tools, state, and evaluations – not just a chat box.

Everything runs on open models. No closed APIs, no vendor lock-in. The model catalogue is version-controlled; runtime selection is reproducible. Learners can swap models and see how outputs shift in real time.

The journey is incremental – from baseline chat, into prompting, retrieval, tool-use, and evaluations. Each module isolates one concept and exposes its knobs, so users see why things happen, not just what happens.

A sovereign lab where people, ideas, and innovators can grow real AI skills, without depending on any single vendor or cloud.

The Lab brings AI, Digital Twin, and XR prototyping into one environment, so innovators can try ideas out, learn from each other across sectors, and see what actually works in the real world.

Available on demand for cohorts, partner institutions, and community programmes.

ainsteins is an adaptive learning platform built for universities, public bodies, and research consortia that want to grow real AI literacy across faculty, staff, and learners.

Sovereign infrastructure. Runs inside your own perimeter. Learners' data, models, and activity stay under your institution's governance, with no third-party API surface in between.

Configured to your institution. Bespoke cohort design, branding, subjects, languages, and assessment rubrics. Not a generic shell repackaged as "education".

Cost designed for institutional budgets. Pricing is outcome-linked rather than per-seat, so you can scale enrolment across departments and cohorts without renegotiating contracts.

SenseMaker uses distributed narrative inquiry to collect first-hand stories of how people experience AI in their work and daily lives.

The platform combines the explanatory power of stories with the visualisation of patterns at scale, supporting sensemaking around AI, tracking changes in awareness and literacy over time, and strengthening the strategic narrative.

Outputs include a current-state assessment of AI awareness and literacy, a curated storybook of collected experiences, and a tailored training programme grounded in what your community actually reports.
